FAQ's for US Citizens and US Permanent Residents


What are the freshman admission requirements to OSU?

To be admitted in good standing, you must satisfy the following requirements:

  • graduate from an accredited* high school or have earned the GED***
  • meet one of the performance requirements
  • satisfy all of the curricular requirements listed below.**

We encourage all students to apply, even if you do not fall within the four criteria below. By applying, it allows us to work together to each your academic goal of attending Oklahoma State University.

Curricular Requirements (15-unit core)
  • 4 units English - Grammar, Composition, and Literature
  • 3 units Mathematics - Algebra I or above
  • 2 units History - must include one unit of American History
  • 2 units Lab Science - Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physical Science
  • 1 unit Citizenship Skills - Economics, Geography, Government, Non-Western Culture
  • 3 units Other - Select from any of the above and/or Computer Science and/or Foreign Language

*Accredited refers to schools fully accredited by one of the six regional associations of schools and colleges or by your individual state department of education.

**Note: In addition to the freshman admission requirements to be admitted in good standing, any new freshman applicant must also satisfy the retention standards listed below for any college-level credit earned while in high school.

***A GED recipient's high school class must have graduated for a student to be eligible for admission.

What if I do not meet admission requirements?

There are special alternative admission categories for some students whose high school performance and test scores do not meet the requirements to be admitted in good standing. For more information about your specific situation, please feel free to contact the Office Undergraduate of Admissions.

How do I apply for admission to OSU?

You may apply for admission online using our electronic application, or a hard-copy application which can be mailed to our office at:

If I am interested in visiting campus, what do I need to do?

A campus tour is a great way to explore the opportunities available to you at Oklahoma State University. There are many options to choose from when you visit the campus. Some of the options include: a campus tour, an academic appointment with the undergraduate college of your choice or even look at on-campus housing. What is the deadline to apply for admission?

If you are a US citizen or US permanent resident you can apply up until classes begin for the semester you wish to attend. We encourage you to apply as soon as possible as some of the other applications such as Scholarships, Financial Aid and Residential Life have deadlines, and awards are dependent upon being admitted.

Once I am accepted, when do I enroll?

Upon acceptance to OSU, you will receive information regarding enrollment. New freshmen enrolling for the summer or fall semester will choose either the recommended overnight or the one day orientation/enrollment program during the months of May and June. Freshmen entering OSU in the spring semester will enroll in early December.

If I am interested in living on campus, what do I need to do?

You can visit the Residential Life website at www.reslife.okstate.edu. On their website you will find information about the three types of housing available to students, on-campus meal plans, learning communities and much more.

How is residency determined?

A student's residency status is determined by staff in the Office of Admissions from information submitted on your application for admission. Please feel free to contact Admissions to inquire about your specific situation. We publish the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education residency policy on our website.

I will earn college credit before I attend OSU. How do I know if my course(s) will transfer?

All credit transferred to OSU is evaluated on a course by course basis. We encourage students to meet with an advisor in the undergraduate college of interest for assistance with course transferability. If you will earn credit from a two-year Oklahoma institution, you can view our online Transfer Guides.

How can I receive Credit by Examination?

OSU grants college credit for acceptable scores on CLEP, AP and IB exams. Contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for a Credit by Exam brochure, which lists acceptable exams, minimum scores required and OSU course equivalents. You can also view the brochure on the web.

If I have already declared my major on my application, how do I change it?

Email the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at admissions@okstate.edu to request this change. Please include your full name, date of birth and/or Campus Wide ID number and the new major in your email. You can update your major through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions until you enroll in your classes. After that time, you will need to contact the Office of the Registrar.

What are the residual ACT / SAT exams and how do I sign-up for it?

The OSU Testing Center administers several exams for current or prospective OSU students who are unable to take the associated national exam on a regularly scheduled national test date. Unlike national exams, scores for these residual exams are valid only at OSU and NOC – Stillwater. To sign-up for the exam, call 405-744-5958 and for more information about the exams visit University Assessment and Testing.
