What is geospatial information science (GSIS)?

As a geospatial specialist, you'll use spatial data for problem-solving that can’t be done with traditional maps and charts. The GSIS program requires a strong mathematics background and analytical skills.

Two state-of-the-art labs provide you with technologies such as Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping, Global Positioning System (GPS) and remote sensing. We prepare you for a training partnership involving faculty and students in Vietnam and a multi-year project aimed at rebuilding Iraq’s GSIS infrastructure.

Geospatial Information Science is increasingly viewed as an attractive career pathway. As geospatial specialists, you will use spatial data for problem solving that can’t be done with traditional maps and charts. The GSIS program is for students who have a strong mathematics background and analytical skills.
You have access to two state-of-the-art GSIS labs to support your studies, providing you with a specialized course of study involving geospatial technologies such as GIS, GPS and remote sensing.
Courses to expect for this major include Digital Tools in Environmental Exploration, Spatial Analysis and Remote Sensing.

Scholarships

Scholarships are available for prospective freshmen, transfer students, current students and continuing students. When you complete the OSU admission application, you are automatically considered for the university level scholarships. Students are also eligible for college level scholarships within the College of Arts and Sciences after completing 12 hours at OSU. Some exceptions may apply. See specific scholarships for criteria. The Geography Department offers departmental level scholarships for eligible students.
